How to Get a Bend Business Into Google AI Mode Results

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews only quote pages already indexed for the question. What a Bend business changes on its site and Business Profile to be quoted.

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews have no submission form. They quote pages Google has already indexed and judged relevant to the question, so a Bend business gets in by ranking for the question, answering it in the first paragraph, and keeping its website and Google Business Profile saying the same facts. This is not a side feature any more: in an audit of 11,500 queries, AI Overviews appeared on 51.5% of them (arXiv 2604.27790).

What is Google AI Mode and how is it different from AI Overviews?

An AI Overview is the summary block at the top of a normal results page. It appears on some queries, quotes a handful of pages, and sits above the classic listings. AI Mode is a separate tab where Google answers in conversation, runs several related searches behind the scenes, and links to the pages it used. Both draw on the same Search index.

Google's guidance for site owners says the same thing about both: there is no special markup, and a page is eligible when it is indexed and eligible to be shown as a snippet (Google Search Central, AI features). What changes is which pages get picked. The overlap between the classic top ten and the pages an AI Overview cites measured below 0.2 on a zero-to-one scale in the same 11,500-query audit. Ranking still matters, but the AI layer has its own preferences.

Does my Bend business need to do anything special to appear?

No registration, no form, no fee. Four conditions do the work. Your page must be indexed. It must be allowed to show a snippet (no nosnippet tag). It must rank for the question a customer asks. And the facts on it must match what Google already holds about you in your Business Profile.

The order matters. If a Redmond roofer's site is not among the top results for "metal roof cost Central Oregon", rewording the page for AI will not rescue it. A benchmark of AI-targeted rewrites found them largely ineffective and often negative, while classic SEO was significantly more effective (C-SEO Bench, arXiv 2506.11097). Fix retrieval first. Search Console shows the exact phrasing customers use; a page with impressions that sits on page two needs ranking work, not a rewrite, before any of this applies. Our local SEO guide for Bend covers that foundation.

Which pages does Google AI Mode actually pull from?

Pages that an engine can extract from. A study of 21,143 citations across ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity found the pages that shaped answers were longer, more structured, and richer in definitions, numbers, comparisons and step-by-step procedures than the pages that were merely retrieved (arXiv 2604.25707). A page that says "we do it all" gives the engine nothing to quote.

For a Bend HVAC company, that is a page titled with the question a homeowner types, such as how a heat pump performs in a Central Oregon winter, with a direct answer, a short comparison table, and the conditions under which the answer changes. For a Sisters landscaper, it is a page on what a defensible-space clearance involves, in steps, with the county rule named. Each page answers one question. A page that tries to answer nine gets quoted for none.

How do I write a page that AI Mode can quote?

Put the question in the heading and a 40-to-60-word answer directly under it. Then support it with evidence. The original generative engine optimization study measured what raised a page's visibility in AI answers: adding direct quotations lifted it 41%, adding statistics 32%, citing sources 28%, and plain fluent prose 29%. Keyword stuffing lowered it by 9% (GEO, arXiv 2311.09735).

Answer the neighbouring questions too. Adding content for the sub-questions a query implies raised citation rates by 15.9% to 17.6% in a 2026 study (arXiv 2609.27845). On a water-heater page, that means replacement cost, tank versus tankless, permit requirements in Deschutes County, and how long the job takes, each under its own heading. Show a visible updated date and, where you can, a real price range. Recent dates and explicit pricing gave small but consistent gains across 252,000 trials (arXiv 2605.25517). The wider picture of how the three disciplines fit together is in SEO vs AEO vs GEO explained.

What does my Google Business Profile have to do with it?

Google names keeping Business Profile information current in its own guidance on AI features, alongside making text available and keeping structured data accurate. The Profile is the record Google trusts for who you are, where you work and when you are open. When the website says Bend and Redmond but the Profile says Bend only, the engine has two versions of you and picks neither with confidence.

Language models also prefer facts that are corroborated across sources and shift toward the version repeated most often (arXiv 2601.03746). Identical name, service area, categories, hours and phone number on the Profile, the website, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect is the cheapest visibility work a Bend business can do.

Should I block or allow Google-Extended?

Allow it. Google-Extended is the token that controls whether your pages are used for Gemini training and grounding. Google states it does not affect a site's inclusion in Search and is not a ranking signal (Google crawler overview). Blocking it therefore buys a local business nothing, and the 11,500-query audit found sites that block AI crawlers under-represented in AI Overviews. Leave Googlebot and Google-Extended allowed in robots.txt and keep the XML sitemap current.

How do I check whether AI Mode mentions my business?

Ask it, repeatedly. Write down the ten questions a customer would ask before calling you, run each one in AI Mode three times over a week, and log whether your business is named and which pages are cited. Answers vary from run to run, so a single check tells you little (arXiv 2604.07585). A spreadsheet with a date, the question, the businesses named and the sources is enough to see movement over a month.

Paid AI visibility tracking tools automate the repeats across engines once you know the questions matter. If you would rather have the baseline measured for you first, the free AI Search & SEO Audit checks a sample of real Bend questions across Google, Maps and accessible AI answers and tells you what to fix first.

When this is NOT the right solution

If your Business Profile is unverified or your site is not indexed, start there; nothing above applies until Google can find you. If all of your work comes from referrals and you have no capacity to publish or update pages, the effort will not pay back. If you run a franchise site you are not allowed to edit, you cannot make the page-level changes that matter.

And if you want a guarantee, this is not it. Google decides per query and per run which pages it quotes, and no agency can promise a place in an AI Overview. Anyone who does is selling something else.

What to do this month

  1. Verify the Google Business Profile and make its name, categories, service area and hours match the website exactly.
  2. Confirm robots.txt allows Googlebot and Google-Extended, and that no service page carries a nosnippet tag.
  3. List the ten questions customers ask before they call, and check which ones your site currently ranks for.
  4. Rewrite one service page per week so the question is the heading and the answer is the first paragraph.
  5. Add one sourced statistic and one comparison table to each rewritten page, and show the updated date.
  6. Run the ten questions in AI Mode three times over a week and log who is named.
  7. Repeat the check monthly and change one thing at a time so you can tell what moved.

This is the sequence WildRun follows in the managed SEO, AEO and GEO service for Central Oregon businesses: rankings first, quotable pages second, and a written record of what changed and what the engines did next. Our AI Overviews playbook goes deeper on the page-level work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit my business to Google AI Mode or AI Overviews?

No. There is no submission form or program. Google draws AI Mode and AI Overview answers from pages it has already indexed and judged relevant, so the route in is ranking for the question and answering it clearly on the page.

Does Google AI Mode use my Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google's guidance on AI features names keeping Business Profile information current alongside making page text available. The Profile is the record Google trusts for your name, service area, categories and hours, so it should match the website exactly.

Will blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google rankings?

Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Search and is not a ranking signal. It controls use of your pages for Gemini training and grounding. For a local business there is no benefit to blocking it, and one audit found sites that block AI crawlers under-represented in AI Overviews.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews after I change a page?

There is no fixed time. Google has to recrawl and reindex the page first, which usually takes days, and then the AI layer has to pick it for a query. Check the same questions weekly for a month rather than expecting a single result.

Do I need special schema markup for Google AI Mode?

No. Google states there is no special markup for AI features. Standard structured data still helps with rich results and with keeping facts consistent, but a clear written answer on the page is what gets quoted.

Why does the AI Overview name a different business each time I search?

Answers vary from run to run and by location and device. That is why a single check tells you little. Run the same ten questions three times over a week and log the businesses named to get a usable baseline.
