Does ChatGPT Recommend My Business? A Bend Owner's Check

Does ChatGPT recommend my business? A 20-minute test for Bend owners, why it names a competitor instead, and what to change so it can quote your site.

The only honest way to know whether ChatGPT recommends your business is to ask it the questions your customers ask, several times and several ways, and log which businesses and sources it names. ChatGPT search draws on Bing's index plus its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, so a Bend business that is missing from Bing or blocks that crawler cannot appear at all. The odds are low by default: brands with no citations of their own website and no mentions elsewhere were named in only 2.8% of relevant ChatGPT answers in a 34,960-prompt study (arXiv 2609.23162).

How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to name?

When ChatGPT searches, it sends the question to a web index, reads a handful of pages, and writes an answer that names the businesses those pages name. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI, OAI-SearchBot). The pages it reads are mostly the ones that rank for the query and the ones that list or compare providers.

That second group matters more than most owners expect. Across a large sample of AI answers, "best of" list articles accounted for roughly 21% of all citations, and niche brands appeared in 11% of relevant answers against 73% for household names (arXiv 2606.20065). A Bend plumber who is in the two or three "best plumbers in Bend" lists that rank on Bing is far more likely to be named than one whose only mention is their own homepage.

How do I check whether ChatGPT recommends my business in 20 minutes?

Open ChatGPT with search enabled and ask the exact question a customer would ask: "Who should I call for a burst pipe in Bend, Oregon?" Read the answer, note every business it names, and open the sources it lists. Ask the same thing two more ways, once as a comparison ("which Bend plumbers have the best reviews") and once as a shortlist ("give me three plumbers in Bend"). Then repeat all three the next day.

Six answers in twenty minutes is enough to see a pattern. Record the date, the question, the businesses named and the source URLs in a spreadsheet. Answers vary from run to run because the model samples differently each time, so one answer is an anecdote and six are a baseline (arXiv 2604.07585). The full method for tracking this over months is in how to track whether AI engines cite your brand.

Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me?

Usually one of four reasons, and the sources in the answer tell you which. The competitor ranks on Bing for the question and you do not. The competitor is in a list article or directory that ChatGPT read and you are not. Your site blocks OAI-SearchBot, or a firewall challenges it, so the crawler never saw your pages. Or your name, address and service area differ between your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories, so the engine cannot tell the versions are one business.

A Redmond electrician whose Bing Places listing says Redmond, whose website footer says Bend, and whose Yelp page says Central Oregon is three weak entities instead of one strong one. Models prefer facts corroborated across sources and follow the version repeated most often (arXiv 2601.03746). Consistency is not glamorous, but it is the fix for the fourth reason and it costs nothing.

What should my website say so ChatGPT can quote it?

One page per real question, with the answer in the first paragraph. A Sunriver property manager gets quoted for "how much does vacation rental management cost in Sunriver" when a page carries that heading, a price range, what is included, and when the price changes. The original generative engine optimization study measured which additions lifted visibility in AI answers: quotations by 41%, statistics by 32%, cited sources by 28%, while keyword stuffing cut it by 9% (GEO, arXiv 2311.09735).

Pages that shape AI answers are longer, structured, and rich in definitions, numbers, comparisons and steps, according to an analysis of 21,143 citations across ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity (arXiv 2604.25707). Put the service area in words on the page, not only in a map image. Show an updated date. Keep the contact details in text so a crawler can read them. The page-level detail is in how to get cited by ChatGPT.

Does Bing matter for ChatGPT?

Yes, and it is the part most Bend businesses skip. OpenAI describes ChatGPT search as using third-party search providers, and Bing is the one it names, alongside OAI-SearchBot's own crawl. A site that is invisible on Bing is invisible to the search half of ChatGPT. Bing Webmaster Tools lets you import your Google Search Console verification in a few clicks, and IndexNow pings tell Bing about new pages within hours instead of weeks.

The classic work still carries the most weight. A 2025 benchmark found rewrites aimed at language models largely ineffective while traditional SEO remained significantly more effective (C-SEO Bench, arXiv 2506.11097). Rank on Bing and Google for the question first, then make the page quotable. The foundation for a Central Oregon business is in our Bend local SEO guide.

How are ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity different for a local business?

They almost never cite the same pages. Across ChatGPT, Copilot, Google and Perplexity, the overlap in cited URLs measured 0.0079 on a zero-to-one scale, and 84.9% of engine pairs shared no URLs at all (arXiv 2609.22655). Being named in one is no evidence about the others, so each has to be checked on its own.

How often should I re-check?

Monthly is enough for a business that changes little, with the same ten questions run three times each so the log stays comparable. Re-check within a week after you publish or rewrite a page, change your Business Profile, or expand into a new town such as Sunriver or La Pine. Paid AI SEO tools can run the repeats for you across engines once the questions are settled.

If you would rather see the baseline before deciding whether any of this is worth your time, the free AI Search & SEO Audit runs a sample of real Bend questions across Google, Maps and accessible AI answers and reports which businesses were named and why.

When this is NOT the right solution

If your website is not indexed on Google or Bing, checking ChatGPT is premature; there is nothing for it to find. If a firewall or bot-protection product challenges every unknown crawler, no amount of writing will help until that is fixed. If your work comes entirely from repeat customers and referrals, a month of logging AI answers will confirm what you already know and change nothing.

It is also not a substitute for reviews. In one audit of how a model chose between hotels, a higher rating raised the chance of selection by 31.6 percentage points, more than any wording change (arXiv 2606.16344). A Bend business with forty recent reviews and a plain website will usually be named before one with a polished site and four.

A checklist for Bend service businesses

  1. Write the ten questions a customer asks before calling, in their words.
  2. Ask ChatGPT each one three times over a week and log the businesses and sources named.
  3. Open every source URL and note which list articles and directories appear; request inclusion in the ones you are missing from.
  4. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and claim Bing Places; make every listing match the Google Business Profile word for word.
  5. Confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and that your firewall does not challenge them.
  6. Rewrite one page per month so its heading is a customer question and its first paragraph is the answer, with one sourced number and one table.
  7. Ask for reviews after every completed job and reply to each one.
  8. Re-run the ten questions monthly and compare against the log.

That is the loop behind WildRun's managed SEO, AEO and GEO service for Bend and Central Oregon: measure first, fix retrieval, make pages quotable, then measure again and write down what moved.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google to find local businesses?

No. ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers, with Bing the one OpenAI names, plus its own OAI-SearchBot crawl. A business that does not appear on Bing is largely invisible to the search half of ChatGPT.

How can I tell whether OAI-SearchBot can read my site?

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check that OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed. Then check your server or firewall logs for that user agent. A bot-protection product that challenges unknown crawlers can block it even when robots.txt allows it.

Why does ChatGPT give a different answer every time I ask?

The model samples differently on each run and may read different pages. Treat one answer as an anecdote. Ask the same question three times over a week, in slightly different words, and log who is named to see the real pattern.

Does my Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT?

Indirectly. ChatGPT does not read Google's index, but the Profile anchors the name, address and service area that Bing Places, Yelp and directories copy. When all of those match, the engine sees one business instead of several near-duplicates.

Should I pay for a tool to track ChatGPT mentions?

Not at first. A spreadsheet with ten questions run three times each is enough to establish a baseline. Paid tracking tools earn their cost once you know which questions matter and want them checked across several engines every week.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. ChatGPT chooses sources per query and per run, and no agency controls that. What can be controlled is whether your pages are indexed on Bing, readable by OAI-SearchBot, quotable, and corroborated by directories and list articles.
